The 2021 Presidential Inauguration | Brianna Cateriano

New year, new president. On January 20, 2021, presidential elect, Joe Biden, was sworn into office where he is to serve as our president for the next four years. Alongside him is Kamala Harris, the first ethnic woman to serve as a vice president in history. This duos’ win in this election is one that has given hope for a brighter American future.

Aside from promising to revive the economy and spirit of the American people, Biden’s triumph truly stands in his promise to overturn much of former president, Donald Trump’s, actions. One action that he plans to repeal is the transgender military ban. In addition to this, Biden claimed during his election that starting day one, he will begin to enact programs to respond to the problems caused by climate change, economic turmoil, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Biden’s win also brought forth the gift of the current Vice President, Kamala Harris. In having such a powerful woman leading the nation with him, Biden’s presidency represents hope to women of color (including myself) everywhere, as Kamala is living proof that anything is achievable for anyone. In just the first few hours of his presidency, Biden has already portrayed his strong beliefs of gender and race equality, as he had Hispanic singer, Jennifer Lopez, perform the classic medley “This Land is Your Land” at his inauguration. As a Latin-American woman who has always felt underrepresented in politics and society, seeing another Latina-American singing at the presidential inauguration was very reassuring and exciting, as I felt hope for total equality in America for the first time. Kamala Harris plays a large part in this excitement and reassurance, as despite all of the backlash she received from the media and her opponents during the campaign, she still triumphed. Whether you voted for him or not, Joe Biden is the next president of the United States. As a powerful duo, both President Biden and Vice-president Kamala Harris share the grand opportunity to completely restore the American Democracy and begin a political trend of gender and race equality, something that is long overdue.
