Cheap vs. Expensive Jewelry | Katherine Lin

Jewelry is a way to show off one’s personality, elevate an outfit, or add a touch of elegance. However, one major decision jewelry shoppers face is whether to buy from cheap, inexpensive brands or invest in high-end, expensive pieces. Both have their pros and cons, making it a matter of personal preference and budget.

Many people are more likely to buy cheap jewelry because it allows them to buy more without spending too much money. Cheap jewelry is widely available in many varieties and styles, and many companies can make their cheap jewelry look like expensive pieces. One of the greatest benefits of cheap jewelry is its low price, allowing shoppers to buy multiple pieces of jewelry for the cost of one expensive piece of jewelry. However, a drawback to cheap jewelry is that it is also created from cheap materials. This often leads to the cheap jewelry tarnishing quickly, making it unwearable. Because cheap jewelry is frequently of poor quality, it can also break easily. Both of these drawbacks force many consumers to re-buy jewelry. While some cheap jewelry can pass as real gold or silver, some may appear noticeably fake due to its poor quality.

In contrast, expensive or fine jewelry is made from high-quality materials like real gold or silver. Although real metals may be highly expensive, many argue the purchase is worth it in the long run. Consumers only have to buy the item once, and it can be worn for a very long time. Unlike cheap jewelry, fine jewelry can retain its shine and color with proper care. Fine jewelry is also made with precision, making it look and feel authentic. The biggest downside to fine jewelry is the price, which drives many consumers away. But for those who can afford it, it is seen as a great investment, and its value can appreciate over time, making the item a timeless piece.
